3. The practice run in the demo

About 30 minutes, 2 of them waiting. You need: to be signed in (see Sign in and open the demo).

In this run you type one wish and plan next year for the demo's fictional residents. Then you solve it, read a result, use it, file it and export it. You will meet every stage of the year once. Nothing here touches a real programme.

Before you start: the demo is shared by everyone signed in. The steps have you work on your own duplicate draft, so you do not collide with anyone. If someone resets the demo while you work, your draft goes: start again. The years named here are those of a reset between July 2026 and June 2027; after that, every year moves on by one.

  7. When you have finished

Part 1. Look round the demo programme (5 minutes)

  1. On Choose a tool, press Rotation Planner (Demo). Home opens, headed Rotation Planner (Demo).
  2. Press Residents, then Existing residents. You will notice the residents grouped by year group, R0 first. After a reset there are 10 in each of R0, R1, R2 and R3. Each name has three figures: completed, pending compulsory and pending elective.
  3. Press Back, then Wishes. You will notice the wish round for next year, its five Milestones, and a replies line such as 21 of 30 replied.

Part 2. Type one wish for a resident (3 minutes)

  1. Under Not in yet, press a name marked now R0. That resident starts R1 next July. Their page opens.
  2. Scroll to Wishes for AY 27/28 and press Make a wish.
  3. Pick Request a posting. Pick Cardiology as the specialty and NHC as the hospital. Leave the length and the period as they are.
  4. Press Add this wish. You will notice the wish join their list as Request Cardiology for any duration at NHC in any period.

Part 3. Make your own draft (5 minutes)

  1. Press Back until you reach Home. Press Load previous draft, then AY 27/28 Draft 1. Its table opens. You will notice four boxes with a small corner mark: postings placed by hand. If the draft is not listed, the demo has been changed: see Reset the demo.
  2. Press Duplicate. Your own draft opens with the line Copied from AY 27/28 Draft 1.
  3. Press the pencil beside its name. Type a name with your initials, such as AY 27/28 practice AB, and press Done.
  4. Press Paint, pick any department, and press one empty box. You will notice the box show the department's code with a small corner mark.
  5. Press Undo. You will notice the box empty again. Press Paint to turn painting off.

Part 4. Solve (5 minutes, 2 of them waiting)

  1. Press Settings, then Scoring. You will notice five numbers, for example Wishes 5, Fairness 5, Preferences 5, the R1 reward 200 and the R2 reward 25. Leave them as they are. Press Settings to close the panel.
  2. Press Solve this table. You will notice Solving, a moving bar and This may take up to 2 minutes. While you wait, read How the planner decides.
  3. When the cards appear under Latest solve, you will notice each card's score, wishes granted, breaches and its manpower line.

Part 5. Read a result and use it (7 minutes)

  1. Press the Result 1 card. You will notice its postings in dashed boxes, under the banner Previewing Result 1, not in the table yet. The four boxes placed by hand have not moved.
  2. In the result's analysis, press Wishes, then Each resident. Find the resident you gave a wish to. You will notice whether their wish was granted.
  3. Press Rules. You will notice whether every Must holds. A broken Must can only come from boxes placed by hand.
  4. Press Use this solution. You will notice the dashed boxes become ordinary boxes, and the banner read Result 1 is in the table.
  5. Press Save. You will notice Saved by the draft's name.

Part 6. File and export (5 minutes)

In your real year you close the wish round before you file. This run skips that, so the demo's round stays open for others. Filing here writes AY 27/28 into the demo's Database for everyone. That is fine in the demo, and a reset puts it back.

  1. Press File in the Database. You will notice the sheet File this table in the Database? and its lists, such as Year group changes and Wish points, expected.
  2. In Type FILE, type FILE.
  3. Press File in the Database. You will notice a done line such as AY 27/28 filed: 30 residents, and a Filed tag with today's date by the draft's name.
  4. Press Export, then CSV. You will notice a file named after your draft in your downloads.
  5. Press Back until you reach Home, then press Database. You will notice AY 27/28 listed as Filed, not begun.

When you have finished

You have met every stage of the year: a wish, a draft, a solve, a review, a filing and an export. Leave the demo as it is. If you know nobody else is using it, you may press Reset the demo so the next person starts clean.

Next: the tasks for your real programme, starting at Stage 1 tasks.
